6.3% Unemployment Rate Hits Record Low in Mauritius

According to the latest statistics, the unemployment rate in Mauritius has decreased to 6.3% in 2023, a significant drop from 7.7% in 2022 and 9.1% in 2021.

The number of people in the labor force has increased by 30,000 to 592,800, compared to 562,800 in 2022.

The number of unemployed individuals has also seen a decline, with an estimated 37,600 people jobless, compared to 43,200 in 2022.

The statistics reveal that the unemployment rate decreased by 5,600 individuals from 2022 to 2023, with a breakdown of 4,400 males and 1,200 females.

The unemployment rate for males has dropped from 6.0% to 4.6%, while the female unemployment rate has decreased from 10.2% to 8.7%.

The statistics further highlight that women continue to make up a significant proportion of the unemployed population, across almost all age groups.

In terms of youth employment, the number of young people in employment has increased by 11,400, from 46,200 in 2022 to 57,600 in 2023. The youth unemployment rate has also seen a decline, from 25.1% to 18.2%.

The employment landscape is dominated by salaried employees, making up around 78.2% of the workforce.

Self-employed individuals account for approximately 19.6%, while family workers comprise the remaining 2.2%.

The median monthly income for salaried employees is approximately Rs 22,000, which includes basic salary, allowances, and overtime pay.

According to Statistics Mauritius, chief executives, senior officials, and legislators earn the highest monthly income of Rs 46,400, followed by professionals and clerical and support workers who earn Rs 25,000 and Rs 22,000 respectively.

On the other hand, those engaged in elementary occupations have the lowest income at Rs 15,600.

Overall, the statistics indicate a positive trend in the Mauritian labor market, with a decline in unemployment rates and an increase in employment opportunities for young people.
