Cop Arrested for Soliciting Rs 300,000 Bribe from Businesswoman

Police Constable Rakesh Unmar, a former member of the controversial PHQ Special Striking Team (SST), has been arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) for allegedly soliciting a Rs 300,000 bribe from a businesswoman.

Unmar, 48, was caught in the act while assuring the woman he could nullify a search warrant issued against her by the Flying Squad of Police Headquarters.

His wife, present during the meeting, was also arrested but later released.

Unmar, denying the charges, faces a provisional charge of corruption after spending the night at the Moka Detention Centre.

This incident follows a previous investigation involving Unmar, who has served as police officer for 27 years, regarding a discrepancy of Rs2.6 million in recovered funds during an Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit operation.

The allegations surrounding Unmar had remained unverified until his recent arrest.
