A team of the World Bank will reportedly be in Mauritius from January 17 to 22, 2022 to review socio-economic indicators and measures.

Defi Media reported that the island’s exports sector, the emergence and progress of new sectors as well as the evolution of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will also come under scrutiny.

In May 2021, the World Bank recommended that Mauritius adopts a new industrial approach based on technology transfer and innovation. This transition had to be done while efficiently managing natural resources via a public-private partnership.

The management of the pandemic in the short term and the search for new markets to “upgrade” exports and address the problem of Mauritius’ declining competitiveness in the world market.

It had also called for enhanced participation in the labour market, especially for women and young people with little education.

The World Bank had also urged for a management of the pension system which, it claimed, is “too generous”.

It had also advocated reforms in the public sector.
