Police Probe Rs 19,600 Fraud after Pensioner Installs Mobile Application

A police investigation has been launched in Rose Hill after a 68-year-old pensioner reported the loss of Rs 19,600 following the installation of a mobile payment application.

The complainant alleges that her bank account was emptied through four unauthorised transactions shortly after she sought assistance to set up the My.T Money app.

Detectives are now scrutinising the circumstances surrounding the digital theft, which saw funds diverted to a third-party account.

Late-Night Alerts

The fraud was discovered in the early hours of 2 March 2026. At approximately 00:05, the victim was awakened by a series of notifications on her mobile phone.

Upon inspection, she found that four separate transactions of Rs 4,900 each had been processed via the newly installed application.

Seeking clarity, the retiree visited the State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) branch in Rose Hill at 09:00 that morning, where bank officials confirmed that a total of Rs 19,600 had been debited from her account.

Disputed Installation

The victim had originally visited a Mauritius Telecom outlet in February 2026, intending to adopt new technology to simplify her financial transactions.

According to her police statement, an employee at the branch took possession of her device to complete the installation of the My.T Money software.

Following the discovery of the missing funds, the pensioner returned to the service point to confront the situation.

A subsequent verification via the app revealed that the money had been transferred to an account held at SBI Mauritius Limited.

Police Enquiries Underway

The distraught pensioner has maintained that she never authorised the transfers, stating she does not fully understand how to use the service and did not share any confidential information.

“I do not believe I did this,” she told authorities, noting her distress over the situation.

Her suspicions have been directed toward the Mauritius Telecom employee who handled her phone during the setup process.

While the employee has not yet been named, the victim has informed officers that she is capable of identifying the individual. Local police continue their enquiries.
