Leader of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), Paul Bérenger, has revealed four potential paths for his party’s future, including the prospect of forming an entirely new political entity to spearhead a “progressive” national alliance.

Speaking at a rally at the Plaza on Saturday, 28 March, Bérenger presented the options as the party navigates its current position within the political landscape.

The most radical proposal involves the creation of a “new MMM” specifically designed to contest upcoming elections by uniting the country’s progressive forces.

Internal and Legal Avenues

Beyond a total rebranding, Bérenger outlined three alternative routes for the party’s immediate direction:

  • Government Backbench: Remaining within the government specifically in the role of “backbenchers.”
  • Internal Assembly: Deferring the final decision-making to the MMM Delegates’ Assembly.
  • Judicial Review: Taking the matter to the Supreme Court, though Bérenger noted this would be “very difficult” and requires further study to see if it is worthwhile.
  • New Political Entity: Forming a “new MMM” with the goal of contesting upcoming elections through an alliance of the country’s progressive forces.

Challenges Ahead

Despite listing the Supreme Court as an option, Bérenger expressed significant reservations regarding the feasibility of a legal battle.

“It will be very difficult,” the veteran politician admitted to the gathered crowd. “We must study whether it is worth it.”

The announcement marks a pivotal moment for the MMM as it weighs these strategic shifts ahead of the next electoral cycle.
