Paul Bérenger, Joana Bérenger & Chetan Baboolall Quit MMM after Critical Policy Vote
In a seismic shift for Mauritian politics, Paul Bérenger, Joanna Bérenger, and Chetan Baboolall have officially resigned from the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM).
The trio submitted their formal letters of resignation to the party’s Secretary General today, Monday 13 April.
The departures signal a major fracture within the leadership of one of the nation’s primary political forces.
Crisis Meeting at Bérenger Residence
The decision followed a high-level private meeting held at Paul Bérenger’s home. This summit was convened in the wake of a pivotal vote by the Assembly of Delegates on Saturday, 11 April.
Internal Policy Dispute
The catalyst for the mass resignation appears to be a fundamental disagreement regarding the party’s current political standing.
On Saturday, the Assembly of Delegates voted in favour of the MMM remaining within the government—a strategy that the Bérengers and Mr Baboolall have now effectively rejected through their exit.
The MMM has yet to issue an official statement regarding the future of the party’s leadership following the loss of these three prominent figures.
