Mauritius on Alert until 8 PM as Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Strike West
A heavy rain watch is in effect for Mauritius this Thursday, 26 March, as meteorologists warn of unstable atmospheric conditions set to trigger localized flooding and thunderstorms across the island.
The warning, issued by the national weather service at 04:15, remains valid until 20:00 tonight.
Experts anticipate moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by lightning, to develop from this afternoon.
Regional Outlook
The western half of the island and the central plateau are expected to bear the brunt of the initial downpours this afternoon.
Forecasters predict the unstable weather will spread to all remaining regions as the evening progresses.
Water accumulation is highly likely in flood-prone areas, with the western districts identified as being particularly at risk.
In addition to the rainfall, visibility is expected to be significantly reduced due to a combination of heavy showers and patchy fog.
Public Safety Advice
Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and have issued the following safety directives:
- Shelter: Residents should remain indoors. It is advised to avoid open plains, hiking trails, and sea excursions. Under no circumstances should individuals seek shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
- Flooding: The public is warned to stay clear of areas prone to water accumulation.
- Road Safety: Motorists are advised to be highly vigilant as fog and driving rain will make travel hazardous.
The weather station continues to monitor the situation as the unstable air mass moves across the region.
