Malaysia Mandates Remote Work Starting 15 April To Tackle Global Energy Crisis
The Malaysian government has announced a mandatory remote working policy for all ministries, public agencies, and state-linked companies to combat rising fuel costs and ensure energy stability.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed late Wednesday, 1 April, that the “teleworking policy” will take effect on 15 April.
The decision, approved by the cabinet, comes as the conflict in the Middle East triggers a global energy squeeze.
Energy Security and the Strait of Hormuz
The South East Asian nation is currently grappling with the fallout of a conflict ignited in late February by American and Israeli strikes on Iran.
In response, the Islamic Republic has implemented a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery through which one-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbon transit flows.
Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan noted on Saturday that vessels belonging to state energy giant Petronas, Sapura Energy, and shipping firm MISC are currently awaiting safe passage through the strait.
In a diplomatic breakthrough, Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed on Tuesday that Malaysian tankers granted permission to transit the strait will be exempt from tolls imposed by Iran.
“We are a friendly party,” Mr Loke told reporters. “We maintain good diplomatic relations with the Iranian government.”
Subsidy Cuts and Consumer Impact
Despite the diplomatic exemptions, the domestic pressure on fuel remains high. Malaysia heavily subsidises petrol, with eligible citizens paying just 1.99 ringgit (approx. 0.42 euros) per litre for unleaded fuel.
However, the surge in global oil prices has forced the Prime Minister to tighten the state’s purse strings.
The monthly quota for subsidised fuel has been slashed from 300 litres down to 200 litres per person.
While the Prime Minister did not provide specific operational details during his extraordinary press conference, the primary objective of the new remote work mandate is to significantly reduce national fuel consumption and guarantee a stable energy supply for the country.
