A police investigation is underway in Mauritius after the body of a 40-year-old man was discovered on the shoreline of a coastal landing station on Saturday afternoon, 23 May.

An autopsy conducted on Sunday morning by a forensic medical examiner has confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning.

The deceased has been identified as Ajeev Harry, a resident of Hermitage. His body was discovered by Flacq police at the débarcadère (landing station) in Poste-de-Flacq, located near a former lime kiln and directly opposite a local temple.

According to initial reports from the scene, Mr Harry was found lying face down on the shore, with the lower half of his body partially submerged in the water. He was wearing a brown T-shirt and green shorts.

During the initial sweep of the area, which was immediately cordoned off by officers for standard forensic examinations, investigators located a vehicle parked nearby.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered Mr Harry’s identity card, confirming his identity. Police records revealed that the vehicle is registered to a company based in Plaine-des-Papayes.

Following the forensic examination of the scene, the body was transferred for the post-mortem examination. Following Sunday’s autopsy, Mr Harry’s body was released to his family.

Flacq police are continuing their inquiries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
