In a move that has captivated thousands online, Vishakha Tania René, the reigning Miss Universe Mauritius 2024, has officially traded the glamour of international pageantry for a quiet life as an English teacher in the rural Japanese prefecture of Aomori.

The 29-year-old, who recently represented Mauritius on the world stage in Mexico, described the transition as a long-matured choice lived “without the slightest regret.”

Her journey from the Arena Ciudad de México to a snowy provincial school serves as a powerful manifesto on authenticity and the courage to start anew.

A Nineteen-Year Dream Realised

For René, Japan was not a sudden whim but a “patient dream” held since the age of ten.

While many are drawn to the neon lights of Tokyo, René intentionally sought out the “real Japan”—a place of ordinary people and deep, quiet connections.

Settling in Aomori, a region famous for its “polar winters” and apple orchards, she has embraced a life that contrasts sharply with her tropical upbringing.

“The comfort was Mauritius; the courage is Aomori,” she shared in a poignant “From Comfort to Courage” social media post that has since gone viral.

The Arc of a ‘Chaotic’ Career

René’s path to the classroom was anything but linear, yet she insists every phase was a building block:

  • Aviation: Two years as a flight attendant taught her “grace under pressure” at 10,000 metres.
  • Media & Tech: A degree in Journalism led to audiovisual storytelling and later a three-year stint as a Tech Project Manager, honing her “rigour and discipline.”
  • Pageantry: Seven years of podiums—including a Top 20 finish at Miss Intercontinental 2019 and being named 1st Runner-Up at Top Model of the World 2020—prepared her to “carry the voice of an island.”

“My journey seems unconventional, even chaotic,” René remarked. “But after the fullness of the pageant world, I was ready for a new challenge.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Now, instead of evening gowns, René dons layers of thermal wear to face -15°C temperatures and snowdrifts that reach her shoulders.

Her daily routine begins at 6:00 AM with green tea and homemade onigiri before she heads to school to inspire Japanese teenagers.

Her students, who quickly discovered her “Miss Universe” title via Google, now view her as a source of inspiration.

René uses this connection to turn her classroom into a “safe space,” teaching not just English, but the multiculturalism and sega rhythms of Mauritius.

A Lesson in ‘Awareness’

The move has fundamentally changed her. René notes that the Japanese values of silence, punctuality, and “awareness” of others have reshaped her personality.

She has also found a new way to live out her environmental advocacy, drawing inspiration from Japan’s meticulous recycling and “zero-waste” mindset.

As she moves from “glamour to authenticity,” René’s message to her followers is clear: “Do not rush things. Believe in the timing of life and live with change, completely, and without fear.”

While she envisions a future that balances her love for both Mauritius and Japan, René is currently focused on the “magic” of a student finding their voice—a reward she finds far more fulfilling than any crown.
