Heavy Rain Warning for Mauritius with Storms Expected to Last until 6pm

A heavy rain warning is in effect across Mauritius this Monday with weather officials forecasting significant downpours and thunderstorms throughout the island until at least 18:00.

The warning, issued at 05:45 this morning, Monday 30 March, comes as active cloud formations moving in from the east begin to impact local conditions.

Residents have been warned to prepare for deteriorating weather that is expected to persist well into the afternoon.

Widespread Disruption Expected

Met Office forecasts indicate that heavy showers and thunderstorms will initially strike the eastern half of the island and the Central Plateau.

These conditions are expected to spread progressively to all other regions as the day continues.

Authorities have highlighted several key risks associated with the current weather pattern:

  • Flooding: Water accumulation is anticipated in flood-prone areas.
  • Poor Visibility: Driving conditions will be hampered by a combination of fog and heavy bursts of rain.
  • Lightning: Thunderstorms are expected to accompany the heaviest downpours.

Public Safety Advice

In response to the alert, the public is being urged to exercise extreme caution.

Safety guidelines issued this morning advise citizens to remain in secure indoor locations and avoid open spaces.

Official advice includes staying away from trees during storms, postponing any hiking trips or maritime activities, and avoiding areas known for water accumulation.

Motorists are further reminded to be “very prudent” on the roads due to the high risk of reduced visibility and hazardous surface conditions.
