Health Probe Launched after Ants Allegedly Found in Incubator of Infant

An internal investigation has been launched at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital following alarming allegations that ants were found inside a newborn baby’s incubator.

Health Minister Anil Bachoo confirmed the probe in Parliament on Tuesday, addressing an incident involving an infant admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on 16 February.

The investigation, officially opened on 12 March, also seeks to address claims that the baby was administered expired “colic drops.”

Allegations of Infestation

The infant’s father filed a formal complaint stating that ants were observed within the incubator and had come into physical contact with the child.

While medical staff maintain that the equipment had been cleaned and no insects were present, Minister Bachoo stated he is taking the matter “very seriously.”

The Minister further noted that he has received complaints regarding the conduct of certain hospital officials.

The case file is currently under review to determine accountability.

Expired Medication Concerns

In addition to the alleged infestation, the Ministry of Health is investigating whether the infant was given out-of-date medication.

The internal inquiry aims to establish if an expired product was used and to identify those responsible for the breach in protocol.

Safety Standards

During Parliamentary Questions, Minister Bachoo emphasised the necessity of strict adherence to medical safety standards, particularly within neonatal units.

He reminded the House that patients in these wards are “particularly vulnerable,” requiring the highest level of vigilance.
