Critical Allegations Force Prime Minister to Dismiss Troubled Inner Circle Collaborator

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has ordered the removal of close collaborator Radha Kumar Cahoolessur, known as “François,” from the Prime Minister’s Office following persistent reports of problematic interference and allegations of corruption.

During a heated Private Notice Question in Parliament, the Prime Minister admitted to significant “difficulties” with his aide.

Challenged by Leader of the Opposition Joe Lesjongard regarding the individual’s role within his inner circle, Mr Ramgoolam revealed that despite a previous attempt to distance himself from the staffer, the situation had become untenable.

A Cycle of Friction

The Prime Minister disclosed that this was not the first time he had sought to remove Mr Cahoolessur.

While he had previously asked the aide to leave, he admitted to being swayed by party members who urged him to be “a bit kinder” and allow a return in a different capacity.

“It seems he interferes in certain things. I have therefore asked him again to go elsewhere,” Mr Ramgoolam told the House, noting that the recent reshuffling of duties had failed to resolve the underlying tensions.

Public Outcry and Allegations

Mr Cahoolessur, often seen at the Prime Minister’s side during official functions and sometimes mistaken for a bodyguard, has been a lightning rod for controversy.

His presence drew national attention on 10 March during an International Women’s Day event, where a confrontation with former Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger went viral on social media.

The scrutiny intensified as the Opposition Leader raised questions regarding potential corruption. Mr Ramgoolam confirmed he had been briefed on these concerns by Mr Bérenger.

Zero Tolerance Policy

While a relevant minister reportedly dismissed the corruption claims as a “misunderstanding,” the Prime Minister confirmed that a formal police investigation is now underway.

Reaffirming his administration’s stance on integrity, Mr Ramgoolam struck a firm tone:

“We are very severe. Zero tolerance on corruption.”

The removal of such a visible figure from the Prime Minister’s immediate entourage marks a significant moment of internal friction for the government as it attempts to maintain its commitment to public transparency.
