Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has moved to reassure the nation that the “Alliance du Changement” remains stable, despite the high-profile resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger.

In a televised address broadcast on the national station this evening, the Prime Minister confirmed that while the departure of the veteran politician is a significant development, the government’s parliamentary majority remains largely unaffected.

He revealed that 16 of the 18 elected members of Bérenger’s MMM party have chosen to remain within the government fold.

“A Sad Conclusion”

Describing the situation as “very sad,” Mr Ramgoolam stated that he had made significant efforts to maintain the coalition’s unity.

“I have been very patient and I made many concessions because I wanted this alliance to last,” the Prime Minister said. “But he has made his decision. I think it is unfortunate that it has come to this.”

The MMM Split

The internal shift leaves only two MMM representatives outside the government ranks: Paul Bérenger himself and Joanna Bérenger.

Despite the personal exit of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Ramgoolam remained firm on the future of the administration, concluding his statement by insisting that the core of the Alliance du Changement remains “intact” and ready to continue its mandate.
