Severe Yellow Alert Triggered After Electricity Demand Reaches Record 540 MW Peak
The Central Electricity Board (CEB) has triggered a “severe yellow alert” on Wednesday morning, 25 March, as the national grid struggles under a significant surge in power consumption.
The alert follows a record-breaking peak of 540 megawatts recorded on Wednesday.
According to Thierry Ramasawmy, the CEB’s Head of Communications, this level of demand is exceptionally high for this time of year compared to previous periods.
The strain on the network is further compounded by technical failures at two major sites. Officials confirmed that two engines are currently out of service: one located at the Nicolay power station and another at the Champagne hydroelectric plant.
In response to the tightening supply, Mr Ramasawmy has issued an urgent appeal to the public to adopt “responsible” electricity consumption habits.
Despite the severity of the warning, the CEB has moved to calm public anxiety regarding potential blackouts.
Mr Ramasawmy stated that the situation is being monitored and assured citizens that no power cuts are planned at this stage.
