Mauritius is set to transform its respiratory medical services through a new international agreement focused on cutting-edge interventional bronchoscopy.

The move follows a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, 23 February, between Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and Professor Kian Fan Chung, a world-renowned pulmonologist and researcher from London’s Imperial College.

Strategic Partnership for Advanced Care

A formal agreement is to be established between Mauritius and the Société de Pneumologie de l’océan Indien.

The partnership focuses on interventional bronchoscopy, a field Professor Chung described as having evolved significantly over the last 25 years to play a “crucial role” in treating various respiratory diseases.

Under the terms of the upcoming accord, the Mauritian health service will gain:

  • The technical capability to perform advanced interventional bronchoscopy.
  • The acquisition of specialised medical equipment.
  • Training and resources for local pulmonologists to apply these modern diagnostic and treatment methods.

Expert Consultation

Professor Chung, who serves as a consultant at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, briefed the Prime Minister on the latest advancements in pulmonology.

With over 40 years of experience, the Professor specializes in chronic respiratory conditions including severe asthma, chronic cough, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The visit highlighted a push to modernise the island’s healthcare infrastructure, ensuring patients have access to treatments that reflect the current global standards in lung health.
