New Pathways for 1,218 Students as HSC Results Show Marginal Rise in Standards

Educational authorities have issued a rallying cry to the 1,218 students who did not secure their Higher School Certificate (HSC) this year, urging them to pivot towards technical and vocational careers.

Data released for the 2025 cohort reveals a national pass rate of 78.98%, with 4,576 candidates successfully passing the exams.

While the majority celebrated, the Ministry of Higher Education is moving swiftly to ensure the remaining minority—just over 1,200 students—recognise that an academic setback is “a moment for reflection, not the end.”

Rising Above Higher Benchmarks

Despite the rigorous nature of this year’s assessment, the pass rate saw a slight uptick from 78.88% in 2024.

Yugeshwur Kisto, President of the Government Secondary School Teachers’ Union (GSSTU), noted that this improvement is particularly significant given that Cambridge assessment thresholds were raised this year.

“Maintaining and even slightly improving success rates under these conditions demonstrates the resilience of our pupils and teachers,” Mr Kisto said.

He further highlighted that winners emerged from a diverse range of institutions, including regional colleges and academies in both rural and urban areas, proving that “success is accessible to all motivated students.”

Polytechnics as a “Bridge to the Future”

For those without an HSC, Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd (PML) has been positioned as a primary gateway to professional qualification. Dr Kaviraj Sukon, Minister of Higher Education, encouraged students to maintain confidence, stating: “Other paths are opening to you, both in tertiary education and the polytechnic sector.”

Dr Tomal Kumar Chadeea, Chairman of PML, confirmed that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) offers practical pathways that do not strictly require an HSC for entry.

These programmes are designed alongside industry leaders to ensure immediate employability.

Available Vocational Streams at PML:

  • Technology: IT, Digital Media, and Cyber Security
  • Service & Care: Tourism, Hospitality, Health, and Sport
  • Technical: Engineering, Maintenance, and Logistics

Enrolment and Guidance

The registration process is currently underway, with orientation teams stationed at campuses to help candidates align their profiles with suitable programmes.

Applicants are required to submit their school results and supporting documentation.

Prospective students can find detailed admission criteria on the official Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd website or by visiting a campus directly for face-to-face guidance.
