Record Heatwave Drives 560 MW Surge Forcing Urgent Rethink of Power Infrastructure
The Central Electricity Board (CEB) has urged subscribers to urgently update their declared electrical loads following a significant surge in power consumption triggered by a recent heatwave.
Record Peaks and Network Strain
Electricity usage reached a peak of 560 megawatts on Friday, 6 February.
This spike has left several CEB transformers saturated, leading to disruptions across the national power grid.
The utility provider confirmed it is “redoubling efforts” to maintain a continuous, high-quality power supply despite the exceptional demand.
The Call for ‘Load Declaration’
To combat network instability, the CEB is calling on all customers to formalise their current usage through an updated “Load Declaration.” This measure is designed to:
- Assess Real Capacity: Provide technicians with an accurate view of the actual load on local transformers.
- Adapt Infrastructure: Enable the CEB to upgrade hardware to meet modern consumption needs.
- Ensure Reliability: Facilitate more effective grid planning to prevent future outages.
Strategic Planning
The CEB maintains that accurate data from subscribers is essential for guaranteeing a reliable and continuous distribution of electricity as temperatures remain high.
