The Minister of Tourism Steeven Obeegadoo has praised the Mauritius destination on CNN, confiding that the island could reach the ambitious 650,000 tourists within twelve months.

Obeegadoo said Mauritius is managing the pandemic in an exemplary manner. “We even received congratulations from the WHO and President Biden,” he said.

“Six adults out of ten have received a first jab and four adults out of ten have received both. We are relatively Covid-Safe. ”

The minister’s interview coincided with an explosion of new COVID-19 cases recorded on the island. Some 119 new cases were recorded over the last 24 hours, leading to the closure of a textile factory in La Tour Koening, a suburb of Port Louis.

The Minister of Tourism also spoke of the planned pharmaceutical industry in which Mauritius is embarking by investing 7% of GDP with the objective of exporting locally-produced drugs to Africa.
