Footage Shows Police Officer Striking 25-Yr-Old Suspect Following Corrosive Fluid Attack
Mauritian police have launched an official investigation following the viral spread of a video appearing to show an officer repeatedly striking a restrained suspect with a baton in Goodlands.
The footage, which began circulating widely on social media this Thursday, 29 January, shows a 25-year-old man slumped on the ground being assaulted by a police officer.
In the video, other uniformed officers are seen intervening in an attempt to calm their colleague as shocked local residents look on.
The Arrest and Escape
The victim of the assault had been arrested early Thursday morning, 29 January, on suspicion of Assault with Corrosive Substances.
Authorities allege that the 25-year-old resident of Goodlands carried out an acid attack last Tuesday, 20 January, following a dispute over a counterfeit banknote, which he reportedly refused to accept.
According to police statements, the suspect managed to escape custody at the station shortly after his initial arrest.
He was later tracked down to an alleyway in the locality where he had been hiding.
Allegations of Resistance
Police officials claim that the suspect offered “strong resistance” during his re-arrest, exhibiting hostile and aggressive behaviour toward the responding officers.
However, the widely shared footage captures the moment the situation escalated into physical violence while the man was already on the ground.
Following the struggle shown in the video, the suspect was overpowered and forcibly returned to the Goodlands police station.
The investigation aims to clarify the exact circumstances of the intervention and the conduct of the officers involved.
