Police: 2 Arrested in Telecommunications Cable Theft Crackdown
Police have apprehended two men in connection with a series of cable thefts targeting major telecommunications infrastructure across the island. The arrests were carried out on Tuesday, 27 January, by the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) of the Northern Division.
The operation follows a string of thefts involving electrical cables stripped from towers belonging to service providers Emtel and Mauritius Telecom.
Suspects in Custody
The two individuals detained by authorities have been identified as:
- Umar Inbr Hussayn Mamode Ally, aged 32.
- Palama Siven Caroopen, aged 39.
Both suspects are residents of the Rose-Hill area. During the operation, officers also seized a vehicle believed to have been used by the pair to facilitate the crimes.
Wider Investigation
Authorities indicate that the duo may be linked to a broader network of criminal activity.
According to police reports, the suspects are believed to be involved in several other similar cable theft cases occurring throughout the country.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to determine the full scale of the operation and its impact on the local telecommunications network.
