Active Clouds Bring Rainy Weather & Potential Lightning Strikes Across Mauritius

Mauritius is bracing for a day of volatile weather as active clouds from the north-west bring a high risk of thunderstorms and heavy showers across the island this Wednesday 28 January. Meteorologists have confirmed that a warm, humid, and unstable air mass is currently circulating over the region.

While the morning began with partly cloudy skies, conditions are expected to deteriorate, particularly in northern sectors and across the central plateau.

Developing Conditions

The weather service warned that showers, occasionally moderate in intensity, are likely to spread to all parts of the island as the day progresses.

Residents in high-altitude areas should also prepare for patches of fog, which are expected to persist into the evening.

The unstable conditions will continue overnight, with cloudy to overcast skies and scattered thundery showers.

Authorities have noted that visibility may be significantly reduced in fog-prone areas during the night hours.

Temperature and Maritime Outlook

Despite the rain, temperatures remain high across the island:

  • Coastal Regions: Highs of 31–33°C, dropping to 24–26°C overnight.
  • Central Plateau: Highs of 27–29°C, with lows between 20–22°C.

A gentle north-easterly breeze of approximately 15 km/h will prevail. However, conditions at sea remain rough beyond the reefs, with south-westerly swells reaching up to 2 metres.

Safety Advisory

In light of the potential for lightning and heavy rain, the public is advised to take the following precautions:

  • Seek shelter and avoid open plains.
  • Refrain from hiking or maritime activities.
  • Do not seek cover under trees during stormy weather.
