80-Yr-Old Woman Dies 5 Days After Ambulance Crash in Port Louis
The patient, Michelle Mary Maude Antoine, has tragically died five days after the private ambulance transporting her was involved in a serious road traffic collision in Port Louis.
The collision, which occurred on the evening of Monday, November 17, at the intersection of Lord Kitchener and Deschartes Streets, involved the private ambulance and a car.
Ms. Antoine, who was admitted to Dr. A. G. Jeetoo Hospital with injuries following the incident, succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, November 22.
Driver Tested Positive for Alcohol
Further police investigations have revealed a significant development: the 48-year-old French national driving the car involved in the collision tested positive for alcohol.
The 59-year-old ambulance driver, employed by the City Clinic, tested negative.
Accident Details and Investigation
The initial police findings suggest the accident took place around 10:20 PM.
- The City Clinic ambulance was en route to the Port Louis medical centre, travelling from Brabant towards John Kennedy Street, when it allegedly collided with a car coming from Deschartes Street and heading towards the New Trunk Road.
- The force of the impact caused the ambulance to overturn, ultimately resting on the pavement with its radiator facing the Deschartes Street bus stop. Metal barriers were also damaged.
- The area is reportedly covered by the Safe City camera system.
Cause of Death and Police Action
An autopsy performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to acute left ventricular failure. The body has since been released to the family for funeral arrangements.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish accountability in the accident, which involved an emergency medical vehicle and a driver who tested positive for alcohol.
