MCB and Visa Tokenisation Drive: 1 in 5 Cards Already Secure in Mauritius
THE Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) and Visa are revolutionising digital payments in Mauritius, leveraging tokenisation to usher in a new era of security and trust in transactions.
Lead Story: Tokenisation Drive
The two financial powerhouses are actively promoting the technology, which replaces a card’s primary account number with a unique, useless-if-stolen digital ‘token’, thereby significantly cutting fraud risks.
The drive was highlighted during a roundtable event held at MCB St Jean on Thursday, November 13, where partners stressed that tokenisation “transforms the way people pay and how businesses are paid,” according to Christian Mbonampeka, Visa’s Country Manager for the Indian Ocean Islands.
MCB’s Head: A “Key Step”
This innovation marks a “key step in the payments ecosystem,” said Stéphanie Ng Tseung, Head of Payments at the MCB, adding that “trust and security are the foundation of any digital payment.”
MCB has already integrated the technology into its Juice application over the past year, enabling the digitalisation of Visa cards. The bank reports a progressive adoption, with approximately one in five cards already tokenised.
Future Plans
MCB and Visa are now focused on accelerating public awareness to ensure tokenisation becomes the new standard for secure payment across Mauritius.
