40-Year Veteran Rises to 2nd Deputy Governor at Bank of Mauritius
Ramsamy Chinniah, a veteran of the Bank of Mauritius, has been appointed as the Second Deputy Governor, succeeding Gérard Sanspeur. The appointment, effective today, sees Chinniah returning to the central bank where he began his career in 1983.
Chinniah, who has 43 years of experience at the central bank, is currently the Director of the Supervision Department.
His retirement was scheduled for next year, but Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has extended his tenure with a three-year contract.
This internal appointment marks a departure from the government’s recent practice of selecting external candidates, such as Rama Sithanen, Rajeev Hasnah, and the outgoing Gérard Sanspeur, to key positions.
The decision to appoint an experienced professional from within the institution is seen as a move to restore stability and credibility to the Bank of Mauritius.
Initially, Marjorie Heerah Pampusa, another senior central bank official, was tipped for the position.
However, Chinniah was chosen for the role and received his letter of appointment this morning. The official announcement is expected later, this 25th September.
A new Bank of Mauritius governor is expected to be named imminently, with the aim of having the position filled by 1 October.
