Ex-Minister Charged With Theft, Released on Rs 15,000 Bail
Former Minister Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah has been released on bail after being provisionally charged with theft. She was granted conditional liberty on Monday, 22 September, at the Pamplemousses Court, with the judge setting her bail at Rs 15,000 and requiring her to sign an acknowledgment of debt for Rs 50,000.
The Allegations
The arrest follows a complaint filed by a Carrefour hypermarket security supervisor in Terre-Rouge.
The supervisor claimed to have reviewed CCTV footage from the cosmetics aisle, which allegedly showed a customer placing cosmetic products worth an estimated Rs 2,140 into her bag without paying.
Following the complaint, the former minister was arrested by the Terre-Rouge CID on Friday. Ms. Koonjoo-Shah is being represented by her lawyers, Bhupeendre Ramsewak and Akash Aumeer.
