Navin Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister, is being prosecuted for allegedly receiving Rs 63.8 million in cash over six years. He, along with his lawyer, Robin Ramburn, Senior Counsel, demanded full access to all documents related to the case.

Yesterday, in the Port-Louis court before the Financial Crimes Division, Ramburn criticized what he called unfair treatment by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). He argued that the DPP is withholding important documents needed to prepare Ramgoolam’s defense.

Ramburn stated that nearly all the relevant documents have not been provided, despite a formal request made on May 19. “We cannot build a strong defense without full access to the case files,” he said.

He emphasized that the law grants the defense the right to see all evidence, both incriminating and exonerating.

The DPP’s representative, Nataraj Muneesamy, responded that the office is not obliged to share documents it does not have or that are not relevant to the case. He also said that information about informants must remain confidential.

The prosecution added that some documents had been shared back in 2017.

The defense requested that the case be scheduled for trial. The court postponed the hearing to November 6 at 10 a.m.
