On the momentous date of Wednesday, 12th March, the Sir Harilal Vaghjee Memorial Hall in the National Assembly played host to an important event where India and Mauritius forged a series of vital agreements during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the guest of honour, Modi celebrated the 57th anniversary of Mauritius’s independence, lending an air of gravitas to the occasion.

In total, eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, heralding a new era in the partnership between the two nations.

These agreements span diverse areas of cooperation, underscoring the shared commitment to progress and collaboration. Here’s a summary of the MoUs that were formalised:

  1. Banking Collaboration: A significant agreement between the Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India was established to create a local currency settlement system, facilitating smoother financial transactions between the countries.
  2. Financial Support Agreement: The government of Mauritius secured a credit facility agreement with the State Bank of India to fund essential water pipeline replacement projects, a crucial improvement to the island’s infrastructure.
  3. Diplomatic Training Initiative: An agreement was made between the Institute of Foreign Service of India and Mauritius’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement a comprehensive training programme for Mauritian diplomats, developing expertise in international relations.
  4. Maritime Security Agreement: To enhance maritime security, a technical agreement was established between the Indian Navy and the Mauritian Police to share White Shipping Information, vital for maritime monitoring.
  5. Anti-Financial Crime Partnership: An important MoU was signed between Mauritius’s Financial Crimes Commission and India’s Directorate of Enforcement to strengthen their cooperation in combating financial crimes, bolstering the integrity of both economies.
  6. Industrial Development Agreement: The Ministry of Industry of Mauritius partnered with India’s Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to implement capacity-building initiatives, empowering local industries.
  7. Public Sector Training Collaboration: An agreement between the Mauritian Ministry of Public Service and India’s National Centre for Good Governance will facilitate training for Mauritian civil servants, enhancing effectiveness in governance.
  8. Ocean Management Cooperation: Lastly, a collaborative agreement was reached between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and the Prime Minister’s Office of Mauritius, promoting shared environmental stewardship and sustainable practices in the marine environment.

These agreements not only reflect the strengthening of ties between India and Mauritius but also establish a united vision for a prosperous future.

The commitment shared during this visit promises to bring about growth, security, and mutual success, marking a significant chapter in the relationship between these two nations.
