Radio Journalist’s Forced Resignation After Threats Sparks Outrage
Radio journalist Murvind Beetun submitted his resignation from Top FM on Wednesday. However, according to his lawyer, Mr. Miguel Ramano, this resignation was more accurately described as a case of “constructive dismissal,” implying a forced resignation.
This incident follows an episode of the show where the head of the controversial Special Striking Team, ASP Ashik Jagai, was a guest.
Present on the set that day were lawyers Samad Golamaully and Ashley Huranghee, who reportedly claimed that it was the Commissioner of Police who had instructed them to assist ASP Jagai during the programme.
The SST is also alleged by Labour MP Dr Farhad Aumeer to have the green light from PM Pravind Jugnauth to crack down political dissidents.
Beetun expressed his frustration on-air before the show abruptly ended. Thousands of Mauritians witnessed the harrowing scenes, rallying behind Beetun.
“In addition to the presence of the two lawyers and the threats from the SST and others, the most serious issue was the reaction of Top FM, including Director Kris Kaunhye, who seemingly sided with the aggressors instead of protecting his employee.
When Murvind tried to file a precautionary measure with the police, there were also alleged attempts to dissuade him.
“Murvind no longer felt safe in his workplace.”
Kris Kaunhye reportedly declined to comment on the matter.
