The long-standing legal crusade by Dawood Rawat, the former head of the defunct British-American Investment (BAI) group, has reached a “decisive milestone” after the Supreme Court of Mauritius ruled that four of his primary lawsuits are now ready to be heard on their merits.

During a Formal Matters Session on Monday, 16 March, Chief Justice Rehana Mungly-Gulbul confirmed that the cases are “in shape” for trial. The transition follows confirmation from legal representatives for all parties that no further documents or motions remain to be filed.

The Defendants

The four specific complaints are directed at several high-profile international and local entities involved in the 2015 collapse and subsequent liquidation of the BAI group:

  • PriceWaterhouseCoopers (International) Ltd
  • Brussels Worldwide Services
  • Grant Thornton (International) Ltd
  • Georges Élie Chung Ming Kan

Mr. Rawat asserts various forms of malpractice regarding the liquidation process that dismantled his former business empire over a decade ago.

Representation and Further Litigation

The court noted that Mr. Rawat is being represented in these proceedings by his daughter, Laina Rawat, who holds a mandate to act on his behalf across all current and future judicial matters.

While these four cases move forward, they represent only one front in a broader legal offensive.

Mr. Rawat has filed additional complaints against high-ranking former officials, including:

  • Pravind Jugnauth (Former Prime Minister)
  • Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo (Former Finance Minister)
  • Roshi Bhadain (Reform Party Leader)
  • Ramesh Basant Roi (Former Governor of the Bank of Mauritius)

In these separate filings, the former BAI chief alleges “abusive expropriation,” conspiracy, and “political vendetta” intended to cause him personal and financial harm.

Next Steps

Beyond the Supreme Court, Mr. Rawat has also lodged complaints with the Financial Crimes Commission against various defendants.

Regarding the four cases now moving to the merits, Chief Justice Mungly-Gulbul stated that a circular will be issued to inform all parties of the official dates for the upcoming hearings before a Supreme Court judge.
