3 Deaths Recorded as Authorities Warn of Rising Leptospirosis and Chikungunya Cases
Health officials have called for “increased vigilance” following three fatalities linked to leptospirosis and a steady rise in chikungunya cases since the start of the year.
A total of 183 cases of chikungunya have been recorded since January, with the virus showing no signs of slowing down.
Over the final weekend of February, officials confirmed 16 new infections—eight cases on Friday 27th and a further eight on Saturday 28th.
There are currently more than 20 active cases, with the daily infection rate averaging between seven and eight new patients.
Leptospirosis Fatalities
While chikungunya cases climb, the threat of leptospirosis has proven more lethal. Out of ten confirmed cases since January, three people have died from the disease.
One patient remains in a stable condition under close observation in intensive care.
Public Health Advice
Authorities are maintaining strict sanitary pressure and surveillance, urging the public to adopt essential preventative measures.
To combat the spread of these vector-borne diseases, residents are advised to:
- Eliminate all sources of stagnant water.
- Sanitise areas surrounding their homes.
- Protect themselves effectively against mosquito bites.
Medical Consultation
Medical professionals have stressed that prevention currently remains the only “truly effective barrier” against the progression of these outbreaks.
The public is urged to seek rapid medical consultation for any persistent fever, unusual pain, or suspicious symptoms.
