Seychelles Pledges Full Support for Mauritius in Chagos Sovereignty Bid
The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Patrick Herminie, has officially reaffirmed his nation’s total support for Mauritius in its efforts to restore sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago.
The commitment, announced following bilateral talks between President Herminie and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, marks a significant show of regional solidarity.
The Seychelles President also welcomed assurances from the Mauritian government regarding the equitable treatment of Seychellois Chagossians within the compensation framework of the Chagos Deal.
This diplomatic alignment comes at a pivotal time in the Indian Ocean region, following Mauritius’ recent decision to suspend diplomatic ties with the Maldives due to that country’s refusal to recognise Mauritian sovereignty over the Chagos islands.
The announcement was made during an official State Banquet held at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre on Wednesday evening, 11 March, hosted by Prime Minister Ramgoolam in honour of President Herminie and his spouse.
During the event, both leaders emphasised the necessity of safeguarding the sovereignty and economic stability of their respective island nations.
They identified the strengthening of diplomatic relations as a priority, announcing plans to open formal commissions in each other’s countries to facilitate deeper bilateral cooperation.
The reception, described as having a warm and convivial atmosphere, was attended by members of the government, parliamentarians, and various leaders from public and private institutions.
Political observers noted the collaborative presence of both Prime Minister Ramgoolam and Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, who jointly greeted the Seychellois delegation.
