Middle East Death Toll Surpasses 2,000 as Conflict Enters 3rd Week
Data compiled by CNN indicates that more than 2,000 people—including both civilians and military personnel—have lost their lives since the outbreak of hostilities. The surge in fatalities comes amid intensifying regional strikes and a series of deadly military accidents.
Heavy Losses in Iran and Lebanon
Iran remains the hardest hit by the violence. The Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations stated on Wednesday, 11 March, that over 1,300 people have been killed.
However, the NGO Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) suggests a significantly higher figure, reporting at least 1,858 deaths.
Official government tallies from Tehran have not been updated for over a week.
In Lebanon, the Ministry of Public Health reports that at least 773 people have died since the start of Israeli strikes. Among the victims are 103 children.
Escalation and Military Casualties
The conflict has taken a heavy toll on international and regional forces:
- United States: Thirteen American service members have died. This includes six personnel killed on Thursday when a refuelling aircraft crashed in Iraq, and six others killed on Sunday during an Iranian strike on an operational centre in Kuwait.
- Iraq: 32 Iraqis have been killed, the majority being soldiers from the Popular Mobilisation Force (PMF), which lost 27 members on Thursday. A French soldier was also killed during an attack on a military base in Iraqi Kurdistan.
- Israel: At least 15 Israelis have died, including nine in a direct strike on a residential building in Beit Shemesh and two soldiers killed in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning.
Regional Impact
The violence has spread across the Gulf and neighbouring states:
- Kuwait & UAE: Six people have died in Kuwait, including an 11-year-old girl. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported six fatalities of Emirati, Pakistani, Nepalese, and Bangladeshi nationalities following various attacks.
- Oman & Bahrain: Three people died in Oman, including an Indian national killed in a sea-borne drone attack on a tanker. In Bahrain, two deaths were recorded—one following an intercepted missile fire on a ship in Salman and a woman killed in a strike on Manama.
- Saudi Arabia: Two people were killed on 8 March when a projectile hit a residential complex in Al-Kharj.
