State Honours Announced to Mark Mauritius’ 58th Independence Day
Three prominent figures have been awarded the Republic’s highest civilian honour as Mauritius marks the 58th anniversary of its independence.
The Prime Minister’s Office released the official National Day Honours list today, Thursday 12 March, naming Rajesh Bhagwan, Jean-Claude de l’Estrac, and Shakeel Mohamed as the newest elevated members of the state.
All three have been appointed Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK), the nation’s premier distinction.
A Tradition of Service
The annual publication of the honours list is a cornerstone of the 12 March celebrations. These distinctions are traditionally granted to Mauritian citizens who have demonstrated “significant contribution” to the nation’s progress across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
This year’s recipients represent a diverse cross-section of Mauritian leadership, with awards spanning:
- Politics and Public Service
- Economics and Civil Society
- Sports, Religion, and Community Development
National Recognition
The GCSK remains the pinnacle of the Mauritian honours system, reserved for those whose impact on the development of the country is deemed exceptional.
While the three new Grand Commanders headline the 2026 list, dozens of other citizens have been recognised for their dedicated service to the Republic in their respective fields.
The announcement comes as the island celebrates nearly six decades of sovereignty, highlighting the individual efforts that have shaped the modern state since 1968.
