Security Alert: 1000s of Mauritians at Risk Following Middle East Strikes

The Mauritian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent travel warning following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran this Saturday, 28 February, leaving the security situation across the Gulf and Middle East in a state of high uncertainty.

Mauritian authorities have strongly advised all citizens to postpone any planned travel to Iran, citing a rapid deterioration in safety.

The government has confirmed that emergency protocols are now in place to assist nationals currently in the region.

Nationals Spread Across the Region

Official figures reveal that thousands of Mauritian nationals are currently situated in various Gulf states for work, study, and religious pilgrimage.

Dubai remains the primary hub for the diaspora, with approximately 1,000 residents reported in the city.

In Saudi Arabia, the presence is significant and geographically diverse:

  • 500 pilgrims are currently performing religious rites.
  • 100 residents are based in the capital, Riyadh.
  • 50 students are located in Medina.
  • 50 residents are living in Jeddah.

Beyond these major centres, the Ministry is tracking roughly 100 citizens in Qatar, 10 in Bahrain, 10 in Kuwait, and five in Oman.

Emergency Measures

In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade confirmed that its diplomatic missions abroad are on high alert.

“Our services and diplomatic missions are ready to provide assistance to nationals who may find themselves in difficulty,” the Ministry stated.

A dedicated crisis cell has been activated to manage the situation. Citizens or families requiring urgent assistance are encouraged to use the following contact methods:

  • Emergency Hotline: +230 405 2576
  • Crisis Email: mfaconsular@govmu.org or mfa@govmu.org

The situation remains fluid as regional tensions continue to impact the safety of the Mauritian community abroad.
