Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos Refugees Group, has officially dissociated the Chagos community from controversial statements made by self-proclaimed “First Minister” Misley Mandarin regarding the use of Diego Garcia for military strikes against Iran.

Speaking outside the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) on Thursday, 26 February, Mr Bancoult launched a scathing attack on Mr Mandarin’s authority and rhetoric.

He clarified that the Chagos community is “completely against” the idea of the island being used as a base for attacks on Iran, stating firmly: “We do not agree.”

A Dispute over Leadership

The row centers on Mr Mandarin’s claims to leadership, a title Mr Bancoult staunchly rejects.

  • Self-Proclamation: Mr Bancoult noted that while people recognize his long-standing representation of the community, Mr Mandarin has “proclaimed himself” as First Minister.
  • Lack of Mandate: “He has no right to speak on behalf of the Chagossian community. Moreover, he is not mandated,” Mr Bancoult said, adding that Mr Mandarin must take personal responsibility for his comments.

Commitment to Non-Violence

Reiterating the core values of his movement, Mr Bancoult emphasized that the Chagossian struggle is built on a foundation of peace.

“Our fight is based on non-violence,” he told reporters, contrasting this stance with the aggressive military positioning suggested by Mr Mandarin.

Legal Action at the CCID

Mr Bancoult’s remarks were made following a visit to the CCID to file a formal complaint.

The activist is seeking police intervention against two internet users for what he describes as “highly defamatory” comments made against him online.
