Montagne des Signaux Green Rebirth : 15-Hectare Restoration Project Unveiled
A major environmental restoration project is set to transform the landscape of Montagne des Signaux, with the Ministry of Agro-Industry announcing plans to clear and replant 15 hectares of state-owned land.
The initiative aims to revitalise and restore this prominent part of the island through a comprehensive “mixed plantation” strategy.
Officials confirmed the site will be populated with a blend of both exotic and indigenous species, with new plants ranging in height from 30cm to 100cm.
Clearing the Way for Growth
The project involves an intensive clearing process to remove invasive woody species that currently dominate the area.
The Ministry has identified several targets for removal, including:
- Prosopis juliflora
- Leucaena leucocephala
- Cassia spp.
- Flacourtia indica
- Haematoxylum campechianum
- Schinus terebinthifolia
Technical Challenges
The restoration work will be carried out across terrain described as partially rocky and dry.
To manage the difficult conditions and the density of the invasive growth, the Ministry will employ a combination of manual and mechanical felling techniques.
This targeted removal of invasive flora is the first essential step in preparing the ground for the introduction of the new mixed woodland, ensuring the long-term health and biodiversity of the 15-hectare site.
