Colossal Biosciences Aims to Produce 1000s of Dodos for A Wild Rebirth

A Texas-based biotechnology firm has unveiled plans to populate the natural world with thousands of dodos, moving beyond a mere scientific curiosity to a full-scale restoration of the extinct species.

Colossal Biosciences aims to reintroduce the iconic flightless bird to its original habitat, seeking to establish a thriving, genetically diverse population.

Ben Lamm, the company’s CEO, dismissed the idea of a limited laboratory experiment, stating: “We are not looking to recreate two dodos. We want to make thousands.”

The Multi-Billion Rupee Vision

The ambitious project follows a significant financial boost, with the company raising $120 million—approximately MUR 5.6 billion.

According to a report published by Country Life on 24 January 2026, these funds will fuel the complex genetic engineering required to reverse an extinction that occurred centuries ago.

The Science of Resurrection

To achieve this biological feat, scientists plan to use the dodo’s closest living relative, the Nicobar pigeon, as a genetic blueprint. The process involves several highly technical stages:

• Cell Injection: Genetic material will be injected into common chickens.
• Gene Editing: Advanced technology will be used to bridge the gap between the pigeon and the dodo.
• Selective Breeding: A rigorous breeding programme will follow to refine the species’ characteristics.

Ecological Restoration

The ultimate goal remains the permanent re-establishment of the dodo within its natural environment.

Mr Lamm emphasised that the project’s success hinges on “adequate genetic diversity,” ensuring that once the birds are released, they possess the resilience to prosper independently in the wild.
