Anti-narcotics officers have intercepted a massive 33kg haul of illegal drugs at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, following the arrival of a flight from Paris. The operation, conducted by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) on Wednesday, 21 January, led to the arrest of two French women shortly after their flight, AF 470 from Charles de Gaulle, touched down at approximately 09:14.
The Seizure
The illicit substances were discovered concealed within the luggage of the two passengers. The total weight of the seizure is estimated at nearly 33kg, consisting of:
- Hashish: Distributed across 159 plastic-wrapped packages.
- Cannabis: Contained in numerous transparent bags.
- Suspicious Powder: A single airtight sachet containing a white substance.
The Suspects
The ADSU has identified the first suspect as Mme J.N., a resident of Charleville-Mézières. She was found to be carrying 15.8kg of narcotics, comprising 52 packets of hashish and 18 bags of cannabis.
The second passenger, identified as B.N., a nurse from Roquevaire, was allegedly carrying a larger load totaling 17.1kg.
Her luggage contained 107 packages of hashish, a substantial quantity of cannabis, and the aforementioned sachet of white powder.
Ongoing Investigation
Both women were immediately taken into custody. The seized substances have been transferred to a forensic laboratory for detailed analysis.
ADSU detectives are currently focusing their inquiries on identifying the local contacts intended to receive the shipment.
This operation marks the second major intervention at the airport this month. On 13 January, a British national was intercepted with a separate consignment of illicit goods estimated to be worth over MUR 250 million.
