Double-Decker Bus Evacuated after Mechanical Failure Causes Smoke Scare

A double-decker bus was evacuated near Bagatelle on Wednesday, 14 January, after thick smoke triggered an automatic fire suppression system, causing minor traffic disruptions in the Bagatelle area.

Rose-Hill Transport (RHT) Bus Services Ltd confirmed that all passengers were safely offloaded following the incident.

Despite the appearance of a fire, a technical inspection later revealed that the smoke was caused by an overheating filter within the exhaust system rather than a mid-journey engine blaze.

Safety Protocols Triggered

The overheating component activated the vehicle’s automatic engine-bay fire extinguisher, which resulted in the significant plumes of smoke reported by onlookers.

In line with emergency training, the driver brought the vehicle to an immediate halt and ordered a full evacuation.

RHT officials confirmed the process was completed “quickly and safely,” with no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.

Local Assistance and Recovery

Staff from the nearby Engen filling station assisted the driver and conductor in managing the situation and supporting passengers.

While the incident caused “slight traffic slowing” in the vicinity, the bus remained operational and sustained no major damage.

Following on-site safety checks, the vehicle was able to return to the depot under its own power.

Internal Investigation

RHT Bus Services Ltd is currently conducting an internal technical evaluation to fully document the mechanical failure.

The company stated this review is essential to ensure all necessary preventative measures are reinforced across their fleet.
