Mauritius Passport Surges to 27th Globally in Latest Rankings
The latest rankings, released at the start of the year, reveal that holders of a Mauritian passport can now travel to 147 destinations without the need for a prior visa. This upward shift highlights the growing strength of the nation’s travel document on the world stage. In this recent ranking, Mauritius has climbed to 27th place in the global Henley Passport Index for 2026, marking a significant boost in international mobility for its citizens.
Access and Restrictions
Despite the increased freedom of movement, the index notes that some boundaries remain.
While the list of visa-free destinations has expanded, Mauritian travellers are still required to obtain prior authorisation or visas for 79 countries worldwide.
Global Standing
The Henley Passport Index is a primary indicator of global mobility, and Mauritius’s ascent to the 27th spot cements its position as a leading passport holder in the region.
The gain in power reflects a positive start to 2026 for the island nation’s international relations and travel accessibility.
