Mauritius Faces 50km/h Gusts & 3.5 Metre Swells as Thunderstorms Strike
Heavy rain, potential thunderstorms, and powerful gusts are set to batter the region this Wednesday, 14 January, prompting official warnings for road users and a total suspension of maritime activities.
The local meteorological station has confirmed that unstable atmospheric conditions, driven by clouds moving in from the east, will bring moderately heavy showers to the East, South, and Central Plateau.
Residents have been urged to take cover during stormy periods, specifically avoiding open plains, hiking trails, and sheltering under trees.
Hazardous Travel and Marine Warnings
Visibility on the roads is expected to be significantly reduced due to localized fog patches. Drivers are being advised to exercise extreme caution.
Conditions at sea are particularly perilous, with “strong” waters reported beyond the reefs.
Southwest swells reaching heights of 3.5 metres have led authorities to advise against all excursions into the high seas and even the lagoons.
Wind speeds from the east-south-east will average 25 km/h, though gusts could reach up to 50 km/h.
Temperature Outlook
Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures will remain warm across the island:
- Central Plateau: Highs of 25°C to 27°C; overnight lows of 20°C to 22°C.
- Coastal Regions: Highs of 29°C to 32°C; overnight lows of 24°C to 26°C.
