Rodrigues Spared as 2nd Earthquake Hits Indian Ocean Within Days
An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Rodrigues this morning, marking the second seismic event to hit the region in less than a week. The tremor occurred at 7:22 am local time on Saturday, 10 January 2026. Despite the significant magnitude, the Mauritius Meteorological Services confirmed in an official statement that no tremors were felt by residents on the island.
According to the meteorological station, the quake’s epicentre was located at:
- Latitude: 19.9° South
- Longitude: 66.3° East
- Location: Approximately 302 kilometres east of Rodrigues
- Depth: Estimated at 10 kilometres
A Pattern of Activity
This Saturday – 10 January event follows a similar incident just four days ago. On Tuesday, 6 January 2026, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake was recorded at 2:09 pm.
While today’s quake passed unnoticed by the population, the earlier tremor—which originated much closer to the island at approximately 77 km to the north-east—was reportedly felt across Rodrigues.
