Mauritian PM & Global Tax Expert Meet to Tackle Major Fiscal Reforms
Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Navin Ramgoolam, held high-level talks with international tax expert Philip Baker to spearhead the modernisation of Mauritius’s fiscal framework.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday, 8 January 2026, focused on the implementation of critical reforms, most notably the introduction of the Qualified Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax (QDMTT).
Aligning with Global Standards
The discussions form a central part of the government’s strategy to strengthen the national taxation system.
A primary objective of the reform is to ensure Mauritius remains a competitive jurisdiction while achieving full compliance with international standards, particularly those set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Inclusive Consultation Process
During his visit to the island, Mr Baker has been evaluating a range of proposals submitted by key stakeholders within the financial sector.
“The goal remains to position Mauritius as a competitive jurisdiction, while ensuring full compliance with international standards.”
The expert has reportedly examined these submissions with close attention to ensure the reform process remains broad and inclusive, balancing the needs of the financial industry with global regulatory expectations.
Economic Modernisation
This collaboration marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to reinforce the Mauritian tax system.
By integrating the QDMTT, the government aims to solidify the nation’s reputation as a transparent and robust financial hub on the world stage.
