Newborn Found Abandoned in Flacq Hospital Toilets

A police investigation is underway in Flacq after a newborn baby was discovered abandoned in a bin within the toilets of the Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital Tuesday afternoon, 6 January. The infant was found by medical staff at approximately 5:00 PM with the umbilical cord still attached. Hospital personnel acted immediately to alert the authorities and provide emergency care to the infant.

Medical Condition and Immediate Care

The infant was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) shortly after discovery.

Hospital officials have confirmed that the baby’s condition is currently stable and described as “satisfactory.”

Suspect Apprehended

The mother, a 23-year-old woman, was located within the hospital grounds shortly after the discovery.

She has been admitted to a ward and remains under strict police guard.

Preliminary reports suggest the woman is currently undergoing divorce proceedings and had reportedly left her marital home over five months ago to reside with her parents.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are waiting for the woman’s health to improve before beginning a formal interrogation. The case has also mobilised social services to ensure the long-term welfare of the child.

  • Lead Investigators: Child Development Unit (CDU)
  • Support Agencies: Family Protection Brigade
  • Current Status: Ongoing police surveillance and medical recovery

The authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment as the investigation develops.
