Immediate safety measures are being enforced on the newly opened Cascavelle Link Road following a series of “grave incidents,” including high-speed racing and a serious drink-driving collision just days after its inauguration.

Emergency Measures Announced

In response to the dangerous driving displayed since the road’s opening, authorities have announced a suite of urgent interventions.

These measures, designed to curb reckless behavior ahead of the implementation of a penalty points system, include:

  • Speed Enforcement: The installation of automated radar cameras.
  • Increased Policing: A reinforced police presence along the route.
  • Infrastructure Changes: New road signage and the potential installation of physical obstacles where necessary.

Porsche Drivers Clocked at 180 km/h

The severity of the situation was highlighted on Monday morning during a site visit by the Minister of Transport, Osman Mahomed. Reports emerged of six Porsche vehicles detected travelling at 180 km/h—more than double the road’s official speed limit of 80 km/h.

Weekend Collision and Arrest

The crackdown follows a violent multi-car accident on Saturday evening near the Cascavelle roundabout.

At approximately 18:20, a driver lost control of their vehicle while attempting an overtake.

The car grazed one vehicle before colliding head-on with a Mitsubishi Pajero and a BMW, eventually flipping over on the carriageway. Following the crash, the driver was found to have a blood alcohol level of 70 micrograms, well above the legal limit.

These actions align with the broader roadmap toward safety and protection on the region’s infrastructure, ensuring the road serves its purpose without further risk to life.
