Mare Chicose Landfill Resumes Work After Dispute Halts Waste Disposal Operations
The Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change confirmed that services were restored on Thursday afternoon, 18 December 2025, after successful negotiations between the operator, Sotravic/Strata, and the contracted truckers. Normal operations have resumed at the Mare-Chicose landfill following a day of disruption caused by a contractual dispute between site operators and lorry drivers.
Official Investigation Launched
Despite the resolution, the government is treating the interruption as a significant matter. A formal complaint has been lodged at the Centre-de-Flacq police station, and the Solid Waste Management Division has launched an official inquiry to establish responsibility for the incident.
Holiday Concerns
The Ministry emphasized that it is taking the matter “very seriously,” noting that the timing of the disruption is particularly sensitive.
“The incident is of concern as it occurs as the end-of-year festive season approaches,” a ministry spokesperson stated.
The government body had been monitoring the situation closely throughout Thursday until the deadlock was broken during afternoon talks.
