Police Detain 19-Year-Old For Attempting To Exchange 3 Counterfeit 50 Euro Notes

The individual, a resident of Pointe-aux-Sables, was detained on the premises of the unnamed institution on 16 December. Following a police interrogation, the teenager was subsequently released. The 19-year-old man was apprehended after attempting to exchange counterfeit euro banknotes for local currency at a bank in the capital.

Routine Checks Reveal Forgeries

The incident unfolded when the young man approached a bank teller to convert three €50 notes into Mauritian rupees. During a standard security screening, the bank’s verification machine repeatedly rejected the currency.

Identical Serial Numbers

The suspicious nature of the notes was confirmed during secondary manual inspections. Staff discovered that all three €50 bills bore the exact same serial number, a definitive indicator of forgery.

Police Intervention

Bank officials immediately alerted the authorities. Officers arrived on the scene and took the teenager into custody for questioning.

While the investigation into the origin of the fake currency continues, the suspect was permitted to leave the station following his initial statement.
