4 Catholic Schools Poised to Join 21 New National Institution Ranks
The four establishments—St. Joseph’s College, Loreto College Port Louis (LCPL), Loreto College Quatre Bornes (LCQB), and Collège du Saint-Esprit—could soon integrate the Ministry of Education’s list of 21 institutions designed to revitalise the National Colleges concept. The proposed institutions, which will replace the existing Academies, are intended to function on a single-sex basis.
SeDEC Open to Reform, Seeks Grade 7 Admission
The Episcopal Committee for Catholic Education (SeDEC) has stated its openness to the reform, while simultaneously defending its core educational principles.
The inclusion of the Catholic schools is part of a broader reform, championed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Mahend Gungapersad, to establish 21 selected institutions.
While regional colleges are understood to be admitting students following the National Certificate of Education (NCE) assessments, sources indicate that the SeDEC is seeking to admit pupils from Grade 7.
Discussions Ongoing
In an official statement, the SeDEC confirmed that discussions with the Ministry regarding the reform are ongoing. A working meeting was held between representatives of both parties on Tuesday, December 9th.
During this meeting, SeDEC officials were informed about the creation of the National Colleges and other aspects of the reform directly affecting school life.
In its communiqué, the SeDEC affirmed that it “favourably welcomes any initiative aimed at improving the quality of teaching provided to the children and young people of Mauritius.” The institution also reiterated its commitment to the fundamental values of Catholic education: respect for human dignity, equality of opportunity (parity of esteem), inclusion, and the holistic development of every pupil.
