2 Elderly Victims Targeted in Separate Robberies; 3 Suspects Arrested

In a victory for local vigilance, a 31-year-old suspect from Cassis was apprehended by members of the public after allegedly stealing beer from a 72-year-old female shopkeeper’s home in Bain-des-Dames. Meanwhile, police have arrested one man and are searching for another following a high-value break-in at a secondary residence in St-Pierre, owned by a 64-year-old retiree.

Bain-des-Dames: Beer Thief Caught by Public

The incident in Bain-des-Dames occurred at around noon on Friday, December 12. The 72-year-old retired shop owner, who runs a small tobacco shop from her home, was alerted by a suspicious noise.

Upon investigation, she discovered a man making off with three packs of beer (18 cans), valued at Rs 1,170.

The suspect fled through the back of the house after the septuagenarian raised the alarm.

However, the 31-year-old man was quickly restrained by passers-by before being handed over to the police.

The stolen beverages were successfully returned to the shopkeeper. Police confirmed the entire incident was captured on the home’s surveillance cameras.

The suspect was subsequently arrested by Bain-des-Dames police and placed in detention under the order of an assistant superintendent of police.

St-Pierre: High-Value Break-In at Secondary Home

In the second incident, a 64-year-old pensioner residing in Port-Louis reported a theft at his secondary house in Malenga, St-Pierre. The break-in is believed to have taken place sometime between December 8 and December 12.

The burglars stole items valued at an estimated Rs 80,000, including 20 iron bars, a bicycle, a drone, and ten bottles of wine.

Police noted that while the area is covered by surveillance cameras, they were not operational at the time due to a power cut.

Acting on received intelligence, the Moka Criminal Investigation Division (CID) carried out a search at a home in L’Agrément, St-Pierre, belonging to a 26-year-old man.

Officers discovered several items matching the stolen property, including a bicycle, a drone, and bottles of alcohol.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of objects suspected to be stolen after he was unable to provide a plausible explanation for the items.

He appeared before the Moka court and was released on bail. On December 12, the victim formally identified some of his possessions, which were then returned to him.

Police are continuing their search for a second suspect linked to the St-Pierre burglary.
